On behalf of clients of COE Architecture International, Christopher Coe brings to bear a relentless pursuit of excellence. His distinguished career has been marked by uncommon leadership and design vision. He holds architecture degrees from Yale University—where he served as teaching assistant to the legendary Vincent Scully—and Louisiana Tech University. With early training in the New York office of Gwathmey Siegel & Associates, Coe moved to Los Angeles from the New York office of Richard Meier and Partners to be project designer on the Getty Center. He then established the Los Angeles office of Arquitectonica and, as its Managing Director and Director of Design, he designed and managed performing arts centers, public schools and residential development projects totaling over $550 million. He was a Partner and Design Principal at Gruen Associates where he oversaw the design of large-scale projects throughout Southern California including the Astoria Residential Towers in Irvine and the 26-story Edgewater Condominium Tower in Long Beach.
Coe’s extensive building experience is bolstered by a firm standing in academia which provides a depth of research into city-making and architectural exploration. He is currently a design instructor at the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture and has taught and critiqued at many schools throughout the country including The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Rice University, the University of Kentucky and California Polytechnic University.
A recipient of the American Institute of Architects’ highest honor for young practitioners, The Young Architects Citation for Design Excellence, Coe was recently elevated into the American Institute of Architects prestigious College of Fellows for his notable contributions to the advancement of architecture in the field of design. He also received the Award of Distinction for his entry in the notable “101 New Blood” juried exhibition. Subsequently, his work has been recognized with dozens of citations including Honor Awards from city and regional AIA chapters and the Los Angeles Business Council. An active member of the Los Angeles AIA, he has served both as a board member and co-chair of the intensely competitive Design Awards Program, as well as serving as a juror for the National AIA Honor Awards. His work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Interiors, Interior Design, Store Design and Design Journal magazines and in books by Thames & London and Rizzoli.
Coe is a member of the Urban Land Institute, SMPS and Lambda Alpha, the international land use organization. Appointed by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Coe has been a member of the Department of Public Works Architectural Evaluation Board for three consecutive terms.
